  • Her name was Bramble.

Not a very fairy-like name, which is exactly why the other fairies teased her.

The other fairies in Elderwood could summon storms from their palms, turn moonlight into glass, make themselves invisible with a blink.

Bramble could... make a seed sprout.

"Wow," the light fairies would say, watching her coax a shy daisy from the moss. "Truly terrifying."

So Bramble stopped trying in front of them. She went to the quietest part of the forest — The Scar — where a fire had burned years ago. Nothing grew there anymore. The soil was grey and silent. Even the wind avoided it.

She sat down in the middle of it and pressed her hands to the ground.

At first, nothing. Then a tremor. Then green.

Not a flower. Not a vine. A whole conversation.

The roots under the Scar had been sleeping, not dead. She could hear them. Old oak roots whispering, "We're still here." Mushroom threads saying, "We can help."

Bramble didn't cast spells. She listened, and asked.

She asked the moss to return. It did, soft as a blanket.
She asked clover to hold the soil together so it wouldn't wash away. It did.
She asked the sunflowers to stand guard, and they grew ten feet tall in a single afternoon, their heads turned toward the Scar like watchtowers.

Within a week, The Scar was gone. In its place was a wild garden that had never existed before — berries that healed fevers, vines that hummed when you touched them, trees that grew fruit shaped like stars.

The other fairies came because they could see the glow from the village.

The Storm Fairy tried to summon wind to test the new trees. The trees just swayed and laughed.

"What kind of magic is this?" she asked Bramble.

Bramble shrugged, her hands covered in soil. "It's not flashy magic. It doesn't happen all at once. You have to be patient. You have to stay."

She took a single acorn and placed it in the Storm Fairy's hand. "Here. Try."

The fairy frowned, then held it tight. For a second, nothing. Then — crack — a tiny sprout pushed through her fingers, reaching for her.

    She gasped.

Bramble smiled. "See? You just have to let it want to live."

Now when new fairies are born in Elderwood, they are taken to Bramble first. Not to learn how to throw lightning or turn invisible.

To learn how to kneel down, put their hands in the dirt, and listen.

  • The Clock at 3:00

Every night, a strange old clock in Vikram’s house stopped at exactly 3:00 a.m.

One night, Vikram decided to stay awake and watch it.

At 2:59, the clock began ticking loudly.

At exactly 3:00, every light in the house went out.

Then Vikram heard footsteps coming from the hallway.

He switched on his phone flashlight.

    The hallway was empty.

Suddenly, the clock started ticking backward.

A voice whispered, “You have one minute.”

Vikram ran toward the front door.

But the door would not open.

    The clock reached 2:59 again.

    The lights came back on.

    Everything was normal.

    Except Vikram noticed something terrifying.

The clock now had two hands pointing at him.

    Then it whispered:

    “One minute starts now.”

  • The Cave in the Mountain

Three friends, Aman, Rohit, and Sameer, went hiking in the mountains. They discovered a dark cave hidden behind some trees.

    Curious, they entered with flashlights.

After walking for several minutes, they heard a loud growl.

“Did you hear that?” Rohit whispered.

Suddenly, a huge rock fell behind them, blocking the entrance.

They ran deeper into the cave and found strange footprints on the ground. The footprints were much larger than a human’s.

    Then their flashlight went out.

Something breathed loudly in the darkness.

Aman quickly found a small opening and crawled through it. The others followed.

    They escaped just in time.

Behind them, they heard a terrifying roar.

  • This three-time Edgar award winner and Mystery Writers of America Grand Master is said to have focused so intently on perfection that it would take him a year to complete each short story he submitted to Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine. His ingenious imagination, precision plotting, strong characters, chosen locales, and deft ability to fool and surprise the reader from a psychological point of view all served to focus attention on his protagonist’s crisis at hand.

In this story about the last bottle of a famed vintage that a mega-rich man is determined to buy from the narrator-wine merchant, the merchant unexpectedly comes across the rich man’s wife in a café, and there’s a flashback to when the two first met. She’s now in a difficult marriage and showing interest in another man. The tension rises until the plot unexpectedly twists in the most satisfying yet realistic of ways.

  • Feathery scammers: Blue Jays are master manipulators that frequently mimic the loud, terrifying calls of red-tailed hawks. They do this to intentionally trick other birds into panicking and fleeing the area so they can swoop in and steal all their abandoned food.
