The "utang-bayad" (debt-payment) repeat cycle—often called the "tapal-system" or debt treadmill—follows a predictable behavioral and financial loop that traps borrowers.
Stages of the Utang-Bayad Repeat Cycle
Stage 1: The Shortfall (Kulang na Pondo)
- Income fails to cover daily expenses, emergencies, or sudden bills.
- The borrower turns to a quick fix like online lending apps (OLAs), 5-6 lenders, or credit cards.
Stage 2: The Borrowing (Pag-utang)
- Cash is acquired fast, providing temporary relief.
- High interest rates and hidden fees attach immediately to the principal amount.
Stage 3: The Due Date & Squeeze (Matting/Collections)
- The deadline arrives, but the principal plus interest is too big to pay from regular income.
- Stress and pressure from lenders mount.
Stage 4: The Tapal / Repeat (Utang para pambayad-utang)
- To clear the first debt and stop harassment, a new loan is taken from a different source.
- The cycle resets at Stage 1, but with a larger total debt size due to compounding penalties.
How to Break the Cycle
Face the total: List every single debt, interest rate, and due date to see the real numbers.
Stop the bleeding: Refuse to open new credit lines or borrow from a new app to pay an old one.
Pay incrementally: Allocate whatever small extra cash is available directly to the principal balance step-by-step.
